Stephen Spender centenary reading

with Fleur Adcock, Grey Gowrie and Craig Raine

It was as an undergraduate at Oxford that Stephen Spender first became associated with such other outspoken British literary figures as W. H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood, C. Day Lewis and Louis MacNeice. His book The Thirties and After (1979) recalls these figures and others prominent in the arts and politics; his Journals 1939–1983, published in 1986 and edited by John Goldsmith, are a detailed account of his times and contemporaries.

To mark Stephen Spender’s centenary, Fleur Adcock, Grey Gowrie and Craig Raine will read a selection of his poetry in the chapel of his former college. The reading will last approximately an hour and will be followed by drinks in the Alington Room by kind permission of the Master of University College, Sir Ivor Crewe.

Tickets are free. To reserve a seat please email Jon Millington at the Institute of English Studies; tel. +44 (0)207 664 4859 There is no parking at University College, which is on the High Street, between Magdalen Bridge and Carfax Tower. For directions go here.
